ANGEL, YOU ARE ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS
9-11-01

OUT OF MIND

 It comes ‘round again

Another calendar year

Seems many have forgotten,

Or choose to forget, how we ended up here.

And there are fewer memorials

There are fewer who pause to find

Just a moment to remember those lost

Please don’t let them be out of mind

Seems no one wants to talk of it

They say to just move on

Do they really not care, does it mean nothing to them

That so many lives are gone?

Just a small acknowledgement

Should not be too much to ask

For mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers

Is seven years that long in the past?

Is it already buried in history

As the lives buried under the ruins

That they could not carry away fast enough

And lose in Fresh Kills under a blood red moon

And there are fewer ribbons, fewer signs of memory

Fewer ordinary people who pause a moment to find

Time to remember all those we lost

Please don’t let them be out of mind.

That Tuesday morn’ is still fresh in my nightmares

As real as my yesterday

And the long weeks it took to find you

Still walk into my thoughts and stay

Tomorrow I will stand at attention

I will listen to those mournful bells toll

For each and every life they took

Not just names dropped down a hole

I will look around me at the families and friends

Now gathered to remember those left behind

We may be fewer in number, but we do not stand alone

We’ll stand at attention, we’ll hear each name they speak

We’ll take your memory back in our heart and then we’ll wander home

And I will stop and honor each photo, each candle, each ribbon

I will pause and take seven year’s worth of moments to find

Each face I know from Septembers past

And I know, I make this promise to you

To never let you be out of mind

My name is Cade Duel Gullickson. In December I had a book of poetry published called "Somebody's Hero: Remembering 9-11-01." All royalties earned by the author are being donated to a FDNY charity called "Fallen Brothers," http://www.fallenbrothers.org. On this site, you will find links to on-line book stores that the book is available at, some poems that are included in the book, as well as articles and photos of Angel Juarbe Jr, one of the firefighters who was killed at the Towers that day, and some general articles and photos about 9-11-01..

This book is for anyone who lost someone on 9-11-01. It is also for anyone who felt the impact of that day on their lives. From the beginning, in the surreal hours following the attacks, continuing on through nearly two full years, the poems are written through “the eye” of many different people: the victims, the firefighters who fought to save all they could, the families and friends who lost someone, wives who lost husbands, parents who lost children, children who lost fathers and mothers, the firefighters and emergency workers who survived, the spirits of those lost, the World Trade Center herself among them. The emotions span the spectrum: disbelief, horror, stubborn denial, resignation, grief, acceptance, and, finally, a semblance of peace. It is this author’s testament to those lost that dark day and to those they left behind, to make a promise that we will never forget.
